Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Brandon S — 27 Jan 2010
Wow. De Niro + Scorsese is a beautiful, unstoppable assault on cinema- probably one of the greatest pairings of all time. "The King of Comedy" is no exception to their stellar track record. Similar to their previous "Taxi Driver," "The King of Comedy" is engrossing and creepy as hell- it takes a polarizing picture of the time period it is made in, and still remains poignant and engrossing today.
I have no idea how the hell they did it but I truly admire the talent. De Niro is unnerving- he's unhinged, nervous, delusional, pathetic, funny- truly an unbelievable role and a great change of pace from some of his famous macho tough guys.
He's a wreck in this and it gets painful to watch. Jerry Lewis is simply excellent, you really feel for him as he gets drawn into this wild escapade. And Sandra Bernhard- she's great, and scares the shit out of me.
And Scorsese- what can I say. A legendary filmmaker. "The King of Comedy" captures the entertainment industry, desperation, obsession, the price of fame and so much more. And by the way- got to love the MPAA in the 70's and 80's- how is this film PG? Haha I wish it'd get re-released into theaters as that today see what happens.
