Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Tatsuhito K — 21 Jul 2016
Man, I never want to see this film ever again. This is not a fun movie, in fact, it is an unpleasant and emotionally grueling experience. Rupert Pupkin is one of the most unsympathetic characters I've ever seen in a film, and Robert De Niro is absolutely terrific as the psychopath who does everything to be on a television show.
This is very frustrating to watch and it should be. That's exactly what Scorsese was going for while making it and he succeeded. "The King of Comedy" is a smart, disturbing, and damn effective black comedy.
