Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Kurt F — 25 Jun 2012
Of the Scorsese films I've seen, this is certainly the strangest. Well, until Shutter Island (or S***ter Island as I call it) came along,.
De Niro plays a struggling and truly delusional comedian named Rupert Pupkin who desperately wants to get on the biggest talk show on TV. So much so that he'll hound his idol; the host of the show played marvelously by Jerry Lewis. Pupkin and a fellow stalker named Masha actually kidnap the host in an attempt to ransom a guest appearance.
This is a bizarre film. And it will DEFINITELY NOT appeal right away to fans of Goodfellas or Raging Bull. It's a different film altogether.
But it's a great one.
