Review of The King of Comedy (1982) by Mark D — 17 Feb 2013
Solid, if a little paper thin, with moments of class evening out the far fetched cracks - especially in todays CCTV, security obsessed world. DeNiro is the stalker here, obsessed with gaining credability for his comedic ability.
He goes to the depths of kidnapping his idol, a famed TV comedy celeb in the aim of getting on TV to gain fame and recognition. Its well played out by all the leads, especially Jerry Lewis, who surprises with a perfectly balanced performance.
Perhaps unusually here, Scorcese suggests the threat of violence rather than carries it out, which probably hinders the film in a way wathcing it nowadays. Its relevency though, is never in doubt. Today more than ever.
