Review of The King and I (1956) by June S — 18 Jul 2011
I love the sets, I love the story, I love the music, I don't love the lyrics. Everything seemed great except Hammerstein's lyrics. He seemed to be putting the meaning of the song before the words, which in turn don't make the songs sound as brilliantly written as they should be.
Perhaps I'm too used to the witty writings of Porter, Mercer, and the Sherman Brothers. It just seems to me that words should come first.
