Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Jennifer L — 14 Mar 2009
An excellent 70's crime thriller. My first foray into the work of John Cassavetes with, based on what I read amongst the other FB reviews, a film that is not a "typical Cassavetes film". I simply picked this one for the evocative title.
Ben Gazzara delivers a wonderfully subtle performance as the enigmatic Cosmo Vitelli. I'll hazard a guess that the Coen Brothers were paying an homage to this film when they cast Gazzara as "Jackie Treehorn" (the pornographer) in their film "The Big Lebowski".
