Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Sheron J — 21 Feb 2010
John cassavetes was one the most talented directors of the 20th century without a doubt. the tension, sadness and overall irony that shows through in this story are almost overwhelming. ben gazzara is sharp and tenacious as he tries to come out on top of a chain of circumstances he can hardly control.
as usual cassavetes brings issues of morality and accountability as a true test of the mettle of the main characters. a man owes a debt. he realizes that the he owes a even larger karma debt and he won't be able to charm his way through life anymore.
