Review of The Killing Fields (1984) by Jonathan B — 16 Aug 2007
First of all, how did the man that directed this and the severely overlooked The Mission go on to direct this year's Captivity? Seriously? From a film on the horrors of mass murder and ethnic cleansing to torture porn? Sheesh...
From these two films of his I've seen, he was a mix between Terrence Malick and David Lean - not quite on the same level as these two, but it seems like he had the potential to be. But c'mon...
Anyway, this is a great, touching movie - much like The Mission - with excellent performances including a non-professional actor who won an Oscar for playing Dith Pran and then there is Sam Waterson (aka Jack McCoy from Law & Order) who is great as well (a very underrated actor).
It's sad, a little eye-opening, but beautifully filmed and told. Give it a watch (as well as The Mission) and try to figure out how he went on to direct Captivity (and produce Super Mario Bros.).
