This movie had such a profound effect on me when I saw it the first time...probably on the big screen in 1984. The deep bond between Pran and Sidney, the inhumanity of the Khmer Rouge. I was fortunate to meet Dith Pran in the mid 80s at an appearance at the University of Puget Sound and have an autographed picture of him with Ronald Reagan somewhere.
What affected me most was knowing what kind of horrors my refugee schoolmates from that region must have witnessed at such a young age, and meanwhile my friends and I were worried about if we had a zit or bought the latest album or whatever inane thing mattered.
