Review of The Killers (1946) by Caleb M — 07 Nov 2010
Do we have control over our fate? Is everything determined through our emotions? The Killers doesn't try to answer these questions, but presents a story of one man's death and what led up to it.
In the end, what have we learned from it? No one in the movie gets much out of it, except for a few fractions of a penny being saved by an insurance company. A beautifully crafted and bleak film noir, The Killers is engrossing cinema.
Ava Gardner is tantalizing, although in far too few scenes for my money, and Lancaster's command of physical presence is refreshing in a world where rapid movements and kinetic editing have all but replaced an actor's need to physically own their character.
