Strip away the lesbian context, you have a touching family drama about parenthood, teenage angst and extra-martial affairs. That makes the movie so watchable still given the controversy. Lisa Cholodenko tells it so affectionately that, gay or straight, they share the same family problems as everyone else, if not, even more complicated!
