Review of The Keep (1983) by Jason G — 08 Nov 2007
Sooooo obvious that this film was severely edited.
Paramount must have been nervous about MANN's super-hyper-long final cut, clocking in at over 3 hours... so they butchered the hell out of it and it shows.
Fantastic cast... great concept (read the book to see how much was left out....or possibly cut out of the film)... But still very moody and hugely atmospheric.
The cast delivers excellent performances and TANGERINE DREAM provides a soundtrack that SHOULDN'T work... yet strangely.... DOES!
The cinematography is breath-taking and the sets and costumes are spot-on.
The film does suffer from poor-ish, 80's SFX but there's still enough there overall to enjoy.
(I still love the scene where the camera pans back to show the immense size of THE KEEP).
Fantastic!
I watched this film for the first time in years again last night (bootleg) and it only left me wanting an official "Director's Cut" to be released even more.
If you can find it... watch it and you can easily see what could have been and maybe even what MANN had intended.
It's a real shame...
Genius... cut short.
