Review of The Keep (1983) by Emil K — 05 Nov 2008
An underrated gem from Michael Mann. This film has been all but forgotten except for a small cult following among fans. There is supposedly a directors cut that features much more footage and a more coherent storyline, but I have only seen the theatrical cut.
Granted, this film makes absolutely no sense, but it is very stylistic. The music by Tangerine Dream is amazing, as are the visuals. A personal favorite: two Nazi soldiers think they have found gold in the walls and instead find a gigantic underground chamber.
The camera just keeps pulling back and back as we realize how incredibly massive this chamber is, and then the evil escapes! Visually stunning!
