Review of The Karate Kid (2010) by Rich B — 23 Jan 2012
Not a remake but a retelling, 2010's "The Karate Kid" is less cohesive and less likeable than its 1984 predecessor. It's not like the 1984 version was a cinematic masterpiece, but Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita had an endearing chemistry that Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan do not.
Plus, it's less unsettling to watch adults playing older teenagers kicking the crap out of each other than it is to watch preteens playing preteens kicking the crap out of each other. If you're in the mood for a coming of age story involving martial arts, (re)watch the 1984 version -- it has heart -- and leave this rather soulless Smith family vanity project alone.
