Review of The Karate Kid (2010) by Corey L — 08 Jan 2012
I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. The original is so embedded in my mind that the thought of a remake annoyed me. The original was just such a classic and part of my childhood. I think what I appreciate the most is that this movie wasn't so much a remake as it was a retelling.
It was its own movie using the same themes as the original while paying homage to it. It was its own movie which is exactly what remakes need to be in order to succeed. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Jaden Smith (who annoys the crap out of me in interviews).
Jackie Chan, for me, is worth watching this movie alone, along with the kick ass fight sequences (which I thought were better than the original). I did miss Johnny and the members of Cobra Kai, though, which I thought were more intimidating and threatening as antagonists than the guys in this version.
I also truly missed the awesome 80s score and montages! I definitely recommend this movie and hope that Hollywood uses this as an example on how a remake should be done. SWEEP THE LEG!!!
