Review of The Jungle Book (2016) by Abe W — 03 Sep 2016
Fantastic live action adaptation of the Jungle Book. Based on the animated The Jungle Book (1967) this version spins it slightly different and meanwhile still pays homage to the original. Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is a young boy who's been raised by Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o) a wolf along with the rest of her pack.
Mowgli was brought to the wolf clan by the panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley). When a massive drought hits the land the fearsome tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) returns and discovers the secret of Mowgli. Shere Khan gives the wolfs an ultimatum telling them when the water returns they must give the boy to him.
Mowgli feeling like he's a problem to everyone decides to leave with Bagheera and be with his own people. On the way Mowgli comes across many different animals including the hypnotic snake Kaa (Scarlett Johansson), the goofy Baloo (Bill Murray) and an orangutan named King Louie (Christopher Walken) that has an agenda of his own.
The movie has a lot of heart and you really feel for Mowgli and his situation. He's a stranger in a very strange world. Always trying to fit in, but never realizing that he's his own person. The film looks absolutely beautiful.
Although, a lot of it is shot with CG it looks. The voice actors give life to the life like animals and everything blends together quite well. Small gripes could be the movie runs maybe about ten minutes too long (how many chase scenes do we need?), but the pacing outside of that is pretty well done.
Overall, give it a look if you haven't checked it out!
