Review of The Jungle Book (1967) by Charlie P — 29 Mar 2018
When the young "man-cub" Mowgli's (Bruce Reitherman) life is under threat from the coming of the evil tiger Shere Khan (George Sanders), Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) the wise panther must convince Mowgli to leave the jungle to the safety of the man-village. However, after meeting his new friend Baloo (Phil Harris) the fun-loving bear and the crazy ape king, King Louie (Louis Prima), Mowgli will do anything to stay in the place he loves, but Khan and the hungry snake Kaa (Sterling Holloway) have other ideas......
Terrific characters, toe-tapping musical numbers from both Terry Gilkyson and the Sherman Brothers and animation that was better than most of the output of Walt Disney Animation Studios at the time due to Walt himself wanting to become more involved with the production after the critical failure of The Sword in the Stone, is what makes his last film made during his lifetime a fitting end.
It may divert heavily from the Kipling text, but The Jungle Book still manages to be one of Uncle Walt's best films on it's own terms.
