Review of The Joy Luck Club (1993) by Stephen M — 18 Mar 2008
I never read the book by Amy Tan, so when I went to the cinema to see this movie, I went in blind; knowing nothing.
It didn't matter.
The combination of storytelling between Amy Tan, Wayne Wang and the extraordinary cast of actress (and actors) is so complete that I grew confused, not once, by the historical references and the jumping back and forth between English language scenes and Eastern language scenes with English subtitles.
The stories, at their simplest place, are so beautiful and moving. Once you have added these cinematic artists to the stories, it is an embarrassment of riches for the audience.
As a person whose heritage is Asian American, I was especially moved by this picture; I would like to hope that it moved non Eastern related watchers, too. I think it did. Storytelling this good is universal.
