Review of The Joy Luck Club (1993) by Jonathon C — 02 Jun 2010
Long. Tragic. With a hint of beauty, The Joy Luck Club has a finely woven storyline. Life in post-WW2 China is the epic, but subtly introduced, backdrop to the lives of a generation of four ordinary Chinese mothers, and the relational disconnect with their daughters raised in the United States with the material advantages that their mothers never knew in the then backwards PRC.
Ultimately The Joy Luck Club was a tinge depressing. It smacked of reality, with a sense of hope that was only just out of reach, never quite fully realized, tensioned by a dominating sense of loss in the lives of all of these women: but hey, sometimes that's life.
It was highly emotional- recommend viewing with a box of tissues handy and following up by viewing something uplifting afterwards.
