Review of The Joy Luck Club (1993) by Rowena A — 09 Sep 2010
This is a great story about 8 women accepting who they are, which means knowing where they came from and confronting the obstacles they face in their relationships with each other and the men in their lives.
I was surprised at how moving the film was, especially Lena's storyline and the tremendous monologue her mother delivers when she snaps her daughter out of just allowing herself to continue to live in a loveless marriage.
A lot of the critiques of this movie deal with the many negative male Asian characters in the film, but I didn't find this to be the case at all. There's plenty of male characters, good and bad, and they're not bad because they portray negative Asian stereotypes.
They're bad because they're bad. Also, on a more superficial note, Tamlyn Tomita is absolutely gorgeous.
