Review of The Journey of Natty Gann (1985) by Ray D — 08 Feb 2009
Solid family film from Disney's slightly-darker period in the mid-1980's, The Journey of Natty Gann is a story about a girl's cross-country journey from Chicago to Washington, aided by John Cusack and a pet wolf--she's trying to reunite with her father (Ray Wise, solid as always) but the film, with its bittersweet ending, is more about what happens on the way there, then the destination.
The setting of the Great Depression makes the film more resonant as well. "Here kids, watch this movie--this is what life was like back then, and how it's going to be again in a couple of years".
