Review of The Jewish Cardinal (2013) by Laurie T — 27 Sep 2015
A smooth biopic about an enigmatic hybrid, a Jewish-born cardinal who becomes an adviser to pope John Paul the second. Though he has changed his name and his faith, he remains culturally identified with Jews.
His father is heart-broken by his conversion, which seems to ignore the value of his mother's death in the holocaust. His attempts to remain true to his parents' memory are complicated by cold-war politics.
The film shows the day to day life of priests, refreshingly free of clicheed romance (His cousin provides the only female presence outside of adoring parisioners). The hero does a good job of striding around energetically, shaking things up.
