Review of The Jerk (1979) by Matthew P — 30 Jun 2008
Long before the comedic style of Will Ferrell movies, there was Steve Martin and The Jerk. The wacky, random comedy is almost identical, and I never really cared for it, but Steve Martin has it make sense down to pitch-perfect.
I'm not sure if this is a very dumb or very intelligent comedy (although there are very dumb moments), but there is a sort of genius about Bernadette Peter's trumpet solo alongside Martin's Ukele playing that sent me from a chuckle into a roar.
Everyone should be able to find something to laugh about in this bizarre light-hearted flick.
