Review of The Jerk (1979) by Tim S — 25 Aug 2014
The Jerk is probably one of Steve Martin's best known comedies overall, I think. It's not the best film that he ever made, but I always enjoys it when I watch it. The tale of this man who "raised a poor black child" who becomes successful and loses everything in the process has some iconic and funny moments from Martin, but it also really go anywhere as a story.
It kind of ends in an odd way as if it didn't know how to end. Much of that can also be blamed on the film's co-writer and director Carl Reiner (who Steve Martin made several films with), but the film, as a whole, is pretty satisfying if you're looking for an oddball comedy that has a lot of heart to it.
It's silly, but not in a spoofing or mean-spirited sort of way. It all comes from the characters. It's a fun movie and one that I saw on TV all the time when I was a kid.
