Review of The Jane Austen Book Club (2007) by Sarah E — 24 Jan 2011
I love movies like this. They're like little in-jokes for an audience, only understood from spending several weeks of summer reading and loving Jane Austen. That isn't to say that movie is perfect.
Some of the elements don't quite add up, and I can't say that's from the process of adapting the novel to the screen or Jane Austen's novels to a contemporary story. The result is something that's quaint and lovely overall though.
Six strangers brought together by six Jane Austen novels, through which they realize that life and love is actually literary. This is my kind of chick flick: smart, bittersweet, well-acted, and loaded with endless references to the woman who believed in a wonderful sort of love.
