Review of The Isle (2000) by Alyssa N — 07 Apr 2008
Another beautiful, tragic film from Ki-duk Kim, who once again demonstrates his skill at being able to portray and evoke intense emotions without resorting to dialogue. It's fascinating to watch the relationship unfold between the two main characters, as what looks at first like a sweet romance between loners turns out to be far more complicated and devastating.
The story is certainly never boring, as one shocking event follows another, but there were times when I had a hard time believing how the characters react (or don't react) to these events. I had to suspend my disbelief a bit too much for comfort, but other than that, it's still a mesmerizing film, worth seeing if Ki-duk Kim's other films appeal to you.
