Review of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) by John M — 31 Jan 2008
One of the dopiest, most unintentionally funny movies in recent memory. It starts off with a well enough premise, but then goes horribly, horribly wrong. As soon as you see the "manimals", you really can't help but laugh.
And I think I speak for everyone when I say what the FUCK was Marlon Brando wearing? That monkey boy was just creepy, although I guess it's nice understanding the South Park joke of Dr. Mephesto and his sidekick.
Val Kilmer is noticably bad here; it looks like he realized that this was going to be a bomb after the first ten minutes, and then he just ran rampant with overacting in an attempt to amuse himself. The film really bottoms out when Kilmer does a two minute long Brando impression.
There is some message here about the struggle for power and human nature, but I sure as hell don't know what it is.
