Review of The Island (2006) by Yash S — 10 Sep 2010
Bay's first attempt at a [slightly] complicated story nicely demonstrates all the pitfalls of his approach. First of all, this is entirely stolen from about half a dozen other sci-fi flicks. Secondly, the director cant be bothered about anything outside of his usual "fashion-photography" visuals.
He doesnt care about either the narrative or the editing. It seems the producers knew this and were only relying on Bay to deliver some neat-o visuals. If you want to make an authentic film in this genre, you need someone who can worry about the global design of the thing and give it a consistent rhythm.
What we get instead is half of a "borrowed" science fiction story about pawns & controlling levels (supervised by the producers), and half an action movie (shot by Bay). The two parts are jarringly at odds with each other.
Little effort has been made to embody a consistent narrative sense, and once we decipher the "secret", the stakes are more or less gone. So on the whole this hardly works at all.
