Review of The Island (2006) by Cameron G — 13 Sep 2014
I didn't go into this film expecting much. Michael Bay attempts to make a philosophy film but gets so caught up with explosions and action, he forgets to add any more depth into his characters or plot.
The first half of the film feels completely different to the second half. That's its main flaw. One cannot truly understand what the main character is feeling if we've barely seen their life. We are only given a slight insight into McGregor's life before he escapes, which isn't enough.
Then the film turns into a typical Michael Bay movie.
The plot that had some hope and the characters that were going to be given some development were exchanged for your average Michael Bay action. Ridiculous deaths, action sequences and truly unbelievable escapes from death litter the remaining half.
I feel sad to see some of my favourite actors star in this. Personally, I think that Ewan McGregor was a terrible choice for this role and his American accent remains to be terrible. However, the "real" McGregor actually puts on quite a good performance.
The only reason I gave this film 1 star and not less is - Spoiler Alert - Sean Bean dies.
