Review of The Iron Giant (1999) by Mayet A — 16 Mar 2013
This movie deserved so much more than it got. It's heartbreaking to know that most movie goers haven't seen this, at most, they've maybe heard of it. If you're reading this review and you haven't seen The Iron Giant, do yourself a favor and watch it.
The Iron Giant, thanks to Brad Bird and excellent voice casting, succeeds so well in making the audience care. Without preaching or being dull, we are taught lessons effectively through Hogarth and the Giant's relationship and the outer conflicts this brings. There is a 'bad guy' in the movie, "Kent Mansley, I work for the government," but he is merely representing the true and sub-textual villain of the film: Fear. The sweeping fear of the unknown drives every character in this 1950's cold war era. The emotional moments really hit hard, while there is still youthful joy and smart humor to balance.
This movie was the inspiration and gained the admiration of all competing animation studios of the time, so you can thank The Iron Giant for things like the 2000's rise of Pixar era.
