Review of The Iron Giant (1999) by Byron B — 04 May 2015
Brad Bird's first feature was for Warner Brothers Animation. I loved the colors and style of animation. The cast of voices does an amazing job too. There are no big star performances. I just sat back and enjoyed the characters and was then pleasantly surprised when the credits rolled to see who had been involved.
A strong story is what really makes this movie so beloved by fans though. Unlike Monsters vs. Aliens more recently, this adventure better captures the cold war sci-fi vibe. The writers show an obvious love for old comic books especially in the Iron Giant's inner conflict between being like Atomo or Superman.
There are many scenes with great visual humor and also many scenes to touch your heart as the boy, Hogarth, befriends and teaches the Iron Giant. This is the first movie I watched from My UltraViolet Digital Collection here on Flixster.
While the streaming seemed to be a bit slow, so that the playback froze a few times throughout the movie, the audio and picture quality when viewed full screen and sent to my wide screen TV was very nice.
