Review of The Ipcress File (1965) by Zachary A — 12 Sep 2007
Meet Harry Palmer: Deighton's response to James Bond. Palmer is a bespectacled, pen-pushing Secret Servant who enjoys cooking and Mozart. But don't be fooled: he is impulsive, violent, cheeky and determined to get whatever task he's been given done.
Michael Caine is perfect for the part. The camera work is incredible: shoulders get in the way of shots, along with doors, phone booths, you name it... it all conveys the message that we only see part of the general picture.
Remarkably well-crafted and has stood the test of time... though the brainwashing scene does look a bit dated...
