Review of The Invention of Lying (2009) by Ashley B — 09 Oct 2011
Yesterday I saw some clips on YouTube from the movie, as a guide to Critical Literacy. This sparked my interest so I gave it a viewing last evening. The title would definitely more usefully be "The Discovery of Imagination", or "The Invention of Story".
To see a world in which literal meanings only exist, and in which people also feel compelled to speak these as a result of having nothing else in their minds, is a source of a variety of humour that is well known in the world - poking fun at naivety.
That one man suddenly gains the ability to imagine alternatives, and to create narratives, is only limited by that man's particular interests - which actually aren't nearly as limited as I had expected from reading other reviews.
I found the wit of the link to a christ figure to be as engaging as the romantic element, and his sincere desire to offer a story that gives hope against the blank wall of death is one that will always be relevant.
It's definitely more worth your time than many other movies on offer.
