Review of The Insider (1999) by Mitchell W — 02 Dec 2012
An intelligent and engaging picture, probably the best film Hollywood's ever made about broadcast journalism. Occasionally it's too self-important, but unlike "Broadcast News" or "Network," it criticisms of the audience and the industry are more edifying and focused.
It's also surprisingly moving, thanks to Russell Crowe's portrayal of reluctant whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand. Even better is Christopher Plummer - the film may not give an accurate depiction of Wallace, but the performance itself is excellent.
Occasionally overwrought (especially in its use of music), most of the visual choices do work and Michael Mann deserves enormous credit for crafting a film this good from a story many deemed too dry and complicated for motion pictures.
