Review of The Insider (1999) by Chris D — 21 Jun 2008
Based on a true story, Russell Crowe plays Jeffrey Wigand, a former tobacco industry VP who blows the whistle on his company's practice of adding substances to increase the addictive properties of cigarettes.
Al Pacino is fabulous as a 60 Minutes producer who attempts to get Wigand's story told, and Christopher Plummer really makes you believe he is Mike Wallace. The corruption and greed that drive our dollar-worshiping society are laid bare and one HOPES that someone in a high enough place MIGHT grow something resembling a conscience.
