Review of The Insider (1999) by Christopher B — 29 Dec 2008
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave Russel Crowe an Oscar for "Gladiator" the year after this gem came out. One wonders if the "Gladiator" nod was actually an apology for overlooking his work in "The Insider.
" Pacino is great as Lowell Bergman--it's nice to see him in a supporting role and not playing variations on the Frank Slade theme. Michael Mann ("Thief," "Heat," "Ali," "Last of the Mohicans") remains one of Hollywood's most capable and underrated directors, and this is arguably his most balanced picture.
And of course, Russell Crowe is really, really great in this movie. See it, see it, see it.
