Review of The Insider (1999) by Alex X — 07 Jul 2009
The dark secrets of scheming corporations exploiting the benefits of capitalism has been well illustrated and exposed in this must-see film, as a combination of solid cinematography, engaging scenes and the brilliant performances by Al Pacino and Russell Crowe.
There is seemingly no flaw in this lengthy yet intriguing film. Fearing that a near 3 hour film may cause serious coma upon the comfortable sofa, it has turned out to be otherwise. The intensity and battle of wits between "what is essentially right for people" are key elements to the build-up.
An insightful depiction of the real event, perhaps the world has changed even more so during course of this epic battle between Dr. Wigand and the Media, Courtrooms and the entire Tobacco Industry. Certainly, Change is a self-conflicting concept that cannot simply be implemented through rational decisions only. Thus, the complexity of Change and Rationality has been beautifully challenged throughout the film.
Smokers won't be too happy with the discovery of the truth in tobacco, but the film will certainly bring much enlightenment and appreciation to all viewers. To all Journalism and Media students, education through digital entertainment has never been more enjoyable.
