The only downside was the script, it was overly dramatized in places just for the sake of dramatize. e.g. The wife left him and filed a divorce just to exaggerate the sacrifice and things Wigand has lost by being on the front line.
Personally, I would consider the wife's action to be greatly disgraceful for abandoning her husband on the battlefield when he's fighting for thousands.
