Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Andrew D — 03 Oct 2012
In times like these where horror movie-goers expect a jump scare around every corner, The Innkeepers tries to bring ghost stories back to their scary roots. Does it succeed? Well, mostly yes, but a little bit no.
Apparently, this film has been adored by critics but hated by audiences. I'm siding more with the critics by saying that this is the most underrated horror film this year. The Innkeepers is a well-told story of an old Inn on its last days in business.
The two innkeepers that run the place decide to figure out what happened to the person that died in the old hotel before they must leave. However, this spirit is holding a terror that they aren't really ready to face.
The reason I think that this film didn't do so well with audiences is that they expect jump scares to be the things that scare them. While there are some in this film, it also heavily relies on good old fashioned suspense.
Plus, all the suspense built through the entire film leads up to a terrifying final half-hour. There were a few things that I couldn't deal with. For one, sometimes the film seemed to lag a bit, but I was still able to keep up.
The main issue I had was Sara Paxton, the girl who played Claire. She just seemed a bit annoying to me. The Innkeepers is definitely something to watch this Halloween season!
