Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Heath A — 19 Oct 2012
Ti West is so good at building suspense from absolutely nothing. Holding on a shots for SO long that your eyes begin to nervously scan the frame, constantly expecting something to jump out or move in the background-- but SO rarely does that happen.
His horror movies are exercises in restraint, building upon our pre-existing notions of how horror movies should play out, and subverting them bit by bit. Like House of the Devil, the fun is all in the buildup, and while the climax doesn't live up to the expectations, it's definitely a worthwhile film, not just for horror fans, but for movie-lovers in general.
