Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Ken L — 13 Mar 2013
So, i've seen a lot of complaints about the innkeepers not having much of a payoff, and that nothing is explained, and yadda yadda- this is all true. there is no resolution. plot is sparse, and we're given nothing more than a shallow, face value scare. but thinking back, did any of those campfire ghost stories you heard as a kid go much deeper? didn't they reel you in all the same? who goes to haunted houses for the lore?
This film forgoes all backstory in favor of fantastic characters and phenomenal atmosphere, which is exactly what sucked us all into those spooky tales as kids. if you're looking for a splatterfest, or something falling under the more hardcore reaches of horror, look elsewhere. but if you're a sucker for atmosphere, if the thought of agonizingly long shots down dark hallways gives you anxiety, if a good, old-fashioned ghost story has ever kept you up at night, this is the one you want to see.
Unless you haven't seen el orfanato. go watch that first.
