Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Shayne J — 01 Aug 2013
Ti West is truly one of the most promising and talented filmmakers working today. His well-crafted and suspenseful horror film The Innkeepers manages to deliver some genuine scares but it also has a couple of very funny scenes.
While this film is clearly influenced by classics such as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and Roman Polanski's Repulsion, it still wonderfully manages to stand on its own. What this character and dialogue driven film realizes is that the scariest thing isn't really the ghost in the basement, but the human mind.
The Innkeepers is a very stylish and subtle psychological horror film that endures more than just one viewing. We really become attached to the characters and the conclusion of the film manages to be both chilling and heartbreaking at the same time.
This is actually one of the best horror films I've ever seen.
