Review of The Informant! (2009) by Derek T — 06 Oct 2013
The Informant! is a comedic drama (or is it a dramatic comedy) about Mark Whitacre, the highest-ranking executive to become a corporate whistleblower in U.S. history. The funniest - and strangest - part of the story is that it is true.
The story winds and weaves its way through Whitacre's years working with the FBI, and Soderbergh deftly balances the advancement of the story with glimpses into the true unstable nature of the protagonist and narrator, played by Matt Damon.
Damon displays great range and comedic timing in bringing sympathy to an odd and ultimately flawed man, and all of the supporting actors do well to orbit around his eclectic Whitacre. The Informant! is a fun movie, but it also has a few important notes to make about American corporate culture and the way in which we deal with eccentricities in modern society.
