There's nobody quite like Don Knotts. This movie is REALLY goofy, partially in an amusing way and partially in a bad way. But clearly, you're not meant to take it too seriously. The redneck-like crab is probably the best supporting character.
The mix of live action and animation is probably good for it's time period.
