Review of The Impossible (2012) by Ryan O — 01 Jun 2013
After watching The Impossible, I found it difficult to put together any sense of words to accurately describe this film. Simply put, I was stunned. How this movie never received the word-of-mouth that I think it should have when it was released in theaters is beyond me. I'm still trying to figure out why it was lost in the holiday shuffle. But let me get on with it.....
The Impossible is emotionally draining and intense, it was hard not to feel helpless for this family separated by the tsunami of 2004 off the coast of Thailand. The scene in the movie is breathtaking. Its hard to even believe there were survivors after the wall of water hit land. The scope of destruction is unfathomable.
Greater still, this film restored my faith in humanity. It is a story of survival against mother nature. It's outstanding and deserves to be seen. The performances by Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts are not to missed. But for me, the one actor who deserves to be praised is Tom Holland, who plays their oldest son Lucas. He has a bright future ahead of him.
My only complaint, and its minor, is the orchestral music in some scenes becomes overwhelming and is incredibly manipulative. But, the story works and I can live with that.
See this movie, its fantastic. Oh, and don't forget some tissues, you'll need them.
