Review of The Impossible (2012) by Mike C — 08 Jan 2014
Much like Parkland, the movie about the Kennedy assassination, this movie just lacks the punch I need out of a good drama. It has some punch: the tsunami was pretty damn brutal. This is a true story, and it's pretty straight-forward. The punch is the story itself.
I can make it emotional. Coming out of my own sob story, I was impacted by the scenes alongside the road. These young couples just wanted a vacation and many of them lost their lives. That's always been a small fear of mine - an accident away from home. Imagine behind halfway around the world dealing with a different language and complete pandemonium if you're loved one died. Likewise, imagine just missing someone. You're hurt, you can barely function, and in the back of your mind is the belief that your husband and children are probably dead and god knows where. Again, yikes.
That said, all that's in my head. The movie sparked those thought processes, but I'm half a maniac anyway. I kinda thought the movie fell flat a little bit in the emotional department. Give credit it where it's do, all the acting is at least decent and a story is told. And the true story is probably remarkable. I just didn't think the movie was.
