Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Sallie K — 24 May 2014
"The Immigrant" is the kind of period piece that is completely out of step with most films in this genre. Its bleak, but not utterly hopeless. The characters are desperate but are not defined by their pain and sorrow.
It has genuine things to say, but never turns those ideas into obvious pronouncements about the perils of the "American Dream". Cotillard, Phoenix, and Renner all do some of their best work here .
. . and Gray just directs the hell out of the whole thing.
