Review of The Immigrant (2013) by Jake R — 01 May 2015
A harrowing period piece that studies the harsh conditions surrounding European immigrants who sought refuge in the United States in 1921. Marion Cotillard conveys a truly selfless woman who is willing to give everything for the possibility of saving her detained sister, and Joaquin Phoenix plays the shameful counterpart who represents so many tragic ideals that have plagued the country for a century.
James Gray directs with exquisite perception, making this one of the most underrated films of the new decade.
