Review of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) by Jason C — 20 Mar 2011
Let me start off by saying that I love Gilliam as a director. Two of his previous films sit comfortably in my Top 25 favourite movies of all time. I truly went into this movie wanting to love it, but it fell short in a few places.
The story itself did not pique my interest at all, in fact it drove me into not caring if Parnassus succeeded in his bet with the Devil at all. All Gilliam films are disjointed, that is part of his charm as a director, but in this case I felt like it would take me out of the story entirely.
The few strengths that this movie has is the stunning visuals and the performances from the main actors. Worth checking out if you are a Gilliam fan, otherwise I would move on.
