Gilliam is one of my favourite directors and certainly the only one I trust to do surrealist films that I like.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is visually exceptional and has "thanks to" Heath Ledger's death a great cast. Maybe it's really the (way to early) death of Ledger that benefits the film the most. The Imaginarium scenes of Anton get an additional dreamy/magical aspect and the three actors replacing Ledger (Depp, Law, Farrell) are terrific.

Doctor Parnassus himself is played by Christopher Plummer which is an example of extraordinary casting as the role seems to be tailor-made for Plummer at this stage of his career.

However there is one tiny (but somehow essential) scene that I found disturbed the whole magical atmosphere. The flash-back when the devil comes to Parnassus for the first time was odd and out of place, there could've certainly been a better choice to explain the pact between them...
